The Artist

Hu Qinwu’s works are born out of his Buddhist beliefs in connectedness and meaning. They are a meditation which brings him calm and order, drowning out the chaos and stresses of the modern world. His works are not emotional but a deliberate and controlled process which focus only on what he deems essential elements. Largely considered an abstract artist, Hu uses grid, line, tone and mark to create his works. They are layered in colour through the meticulous placement of dots on a tight grid. The dots represent text which remains the underlying inspiration across all of his work and links his process to the ancient scholarly practices of calligraphy and ink painting.
